After news broke that Bloomberg News is spying and tracking and collecting and analysing personal information from Bloomberg data terminals on Wall Street, one wonders how do the mobile Bloomberg apps work in connection with the Bloomberg data terminals ?

Also, seems amazing that Bloomberg would allow this to happen given sensitivity around privacy post the phone hacking scandal

There's no way yet to independently confirm whether Bloomberg News was able to access trading, portfolio, monitor, blotter, or other related systems, confirms, or private messages from the Wall Street data terminals. But it is known that several hundred people employed by Michael Bloomberg had access to information about what Wall Street terminal users did on their computers. For example, the secret data being collected included who logged into which data terminal and when, and what kinds of functions data terminal users performed.

Is it a valid concern to wonder what kind of information the mobile Bloomberg apps tracked or collected ? This latest scandal has people on Wall Street worried about how secure their data really is, if they use Bloomberg data terminals and the mobile Bloomberg apps.

On September 6, 2012, activists against the Fracking Pipeline that is proposed to run through the West Village organised a demonstration along the West Side Highway. At that protest, a white shirt police officer was caught video taping lawful political activities of the protesters. If the protesters were only engaged in lawful political activities on September 6, as it surely does appear, then does the monitoring of the protesters by the NYPD not violate the Handschu Agreement ?

The Handschu agreement is a court ruling from the case Handschu v. Special Services Division, 605 F.Supp. 1384, affirmed 787 F.2d 828, that brought about guidelines that regulate police behavior in New York City with regard to police monitoring of citizens' political activity (Wikipedia).

A large coalition of activist groups accused police of compiling information to punish and repress lawful dissent, according to Wikipedia.

For the last year, the NYPD and the Bloomberg administration have been monitoring the Occupy Wall Street movement since before activists began their occupation in Liberty Square. In 2011, NYPD used camcorders to videotape protesters during a march against the execution of Troy Davis. On one occasion, in 2012, Occupy activists caught the NYPD engaged in monitoring the lawful political activities by #OWS.

Because New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg gives direct orders to NYPD, what kind of approval has he made about any illegal monitoring acts by the New York Police Department ? Does this video appear to show that NYPD Intelligence Division assault reporters, block news cameras, and attack the Freedom of the Press to benefit Mayor Bloomberg ?

NEW YORK — Undercover NYPD officers attended meetings of liberal political organizations and kept intelligence files on activists who planned protests around the country, according to interviews and documents that show how police have used counterterrorism tactics to monitor even lawful activities.

The infiltration echoes the tactics the NYPD used in the run-up to New York's 2004 Republican National Convention, when police monitored church groups, anti-war organizations and environmental advocates nationwide. That effort was revealed by The New York Times in 2007 and in an ongoing federal civil rights lawsuit over how the NYPD treated convention protesters. ...

Everybody is encouraged to file a Freedom of Information Act request, to find out if the NYPD has been spying on YOU !

Not only are NYPD now engaged in stop and frisk against Black and Hispanic men and monitoring Muslims and Muslim-Americans, but now they are spying on #OccupyWallStreet protesters.

... Though Occupy Wall Street has largely faded from the headlines, organizers are planning springtime demonstrations in an effort to revitalize their movement. And they are troubled by what they consider continued monitoring by the police.

In 2003, citing the dangers of terrorism, a federal judge granted expanded surveillance powers to the New York police, who had previously faced restrictions in monitoring political groups. Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and others have said the new latitude is essential to keeping the city safe.

But the Police Department’s surveillance efforts have recently gained attention and criticism with reports that officers compiled detailed data on Muslim communities. Now, some Occupy protesters worry that they are being subjected to similar scrutiny.

For the last few months, protest organizers say, police officers or detectives have been posted outside buildings where private meetings were taking place, have visited the homes of organizers and have questioned protesters arrested on minor charges. ...

Undercover officers are generally entitled to attend public political gatherings. Protesters said apparent efforts to keep tabs on them had included officers’ showing up at private meetings and what some described as attempts at intimidation. ...

No word from New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn about the ongoing domestic spying, racial profiling, religious profiling, and the monitoring of political activities by the NYPD.

NYPD Spied On Muslim Students

Bloomberg defends NYPD Muslim spying at Yale

From The New York Daily News :

Mayor Bloomberg defended the NYPD’s spying on Muslim students at Yale on Tuesday — but only after taking an odd trip down memory lane.

The Associated Press reported Saturday in an ongoing series that an undercover detective went white-water rafting with the students upstate.

“The only white-water rafting I’ve done, I did with my daughter,” Bloomberg said. “I don’t think she had a lot of information that I was interested in.”

The NYPD spying drew harsh criticism from the university’s president, who called it “antithetical to the values of Yale ... and the United States.”

During the trip, the cops took the students’ names and noted how many times a day they prayed.

Agents also trawled Muslim student websites, the AP reported. The students had not been accused of any wrongdoing.

Bloomberg said the sites were available to everybody and “given that we’ve had a dozen people convicted ... including the Underwear Bomber ... of course we are going to look at anything that’s publicly available.”

Underwear-bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who tried to blow up a plane with nearly 300 people onboard on Christmas Day 2009, was sentenced to life in prison last week.

“This is a dangerous place,” Bloomberg said. “Make no mistake about it. ... The job of our law enforcement is to make sure that they prevent things.”

Bloomberg went on to say that the police department goes where there are allegations.

“That’s what you'd expect them to do. That's what you'd want them to do,” he said. “Remind yourself when you turn out the light tonight.”

In a flashback to the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City, >police rounded up and arrested over 700 activists on the Brooklyn Bridge during a political demonstration.

Police said that those activists, who impeded vehicular traffic on the bridge were were arrested. But The New York Times reported that "many protesters said they believed the police had tricked them, allowing them onto the bridge, and even escorting them partway across, only to trap them in orange netting after hundreds had entered." Some of the activists, who were arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge, had their hands bound with plastic ties that the NYPD has used at other mass demonstration. Separately, the NYPD admitted that they police force had taken their own videos of the protesters, who had taken part in the demonstration, deliberately and intentionally tracking and monitoring the peaceful activists.

Attorney Wylie Stecklow, whose law firm represents many of the activists, who were arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge, said that the pattern of the NYPD's behaviour toward the Occupy Wall Street protesters was reminiscent of the mass arrests that police made during the 2004 Republican National Convention.

Political operative John Haggerty Jr. may stand accused of swiping $750,000 from Mayor Bloomberg, but that doesn't mean City Hall is ready to disclose any more details about him than it has to.

Responding to a Freedom of Information request filed by The Post seven months ago, the mayor's office last week provided just nine e-mail exchanges between Haggerty and mayoral aides in all of 2008 and 2009.

There were other e-mails that the mayor's refuses to release on the grounds of "personal privacy."

They're so private, in fact, officials won't even say how many e-mails are being withheld.

That's a stricter policy than was in force in 2007, when the mayor's former Albany lobbyist, Anthony (Skip) Piscitelli, was discovered to have violated ethics rules by contacting administration officials in 127 e-mails soon after he left while representing private clients.

Back then, the mayor's office declined to release 62 of the e-mails, claiming they weren't government-related. But at least they gave out the numbers.

The skimpy exchanges that were provided with Haggerty indicate he was close as could be to top mayoral aides.

Of course, that was before this year's stunning indictment, in which the Manhattan DA's Office charged Haggerty with stealing $750,000 in Bloomberg money that was meant for the Independence Party's Election Day poll-watching operations.

On April 15, 2008, when he still had an open door at City Hall, Haggerty fired off an e-mail to mayoral adviser Shea Fink, requesting three tickets for the pope's visit to New York.

"I wasn't asking you to do it (because you do so many things for me already xoxo), but if you are willing to help I really appreciate it," Haggerty wrote.

A couple of months later Haggerty asked for another favor -- five tickets to the "Made in NY" celebration at Gracie Mansion that featured several film and TV stars.

Haggerty maintains his innocence, claiming his deal with the mayor and the party allowed him to keep the $750,000 he's accused of stealing.

Missing Campaign Money

While Michael Bloomberg was on an unprecedented spending spree to buy his ill-fated th3rd t3rm as mayor of New York City, among the millions he spent out of his own pocket was $1.2 million, which he gave to the Independence Party.

Of that $1.2 million, supposedly $750,000 was paid to John Haggerty, yet the lesser amount has turned up missing.

How can a mayor, who has control-queen issues, not know where his millions of dollars are going ?

The mayor, who infiltrates activist groups and spies on political opponents, is not admitting anything publicly, because the Manhattan district attorney's office is probing the electioneering payments.

Misogynistic Mayor may cost Quinn her Leadership

The mayor doesn't like discussing the subject of the class action sexual harassment case against him and his company.

New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn's power base is now in question -- following her close association with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his controversial push for third term extensions.

Bloomberg tricked Quinn into doing his dirty work on extending term limits, and then left her out to fend herself against voter anger. More evidence of his bias against women.

A. A complicated subject. Mr. Bloomberg and his company faced three sexual harassment and discrimination lawsuits when he was still in charge of Bloomberg L.P. One suit, by a woman who charged Mr. Bloomberg with snapping “Kill it!” when she told him she was pregnant, claimed that he and other company executives subjected women to “repeated and unwelcome” sexual comments and overtures. That suit was settled the year before Mr. Bloomberg became a mayoral candidate. He did not admit guilt, and the plaintiff accepted an undisclosed sum and agreed to remain forever silent. A second harassment suit was dropped because of legal blunders by the woman’s lawyer, and a third was withdrawn after the plaintiff’s husband, another Bloomberg employee, pleaded guilty to stealing from the company.

YouTube.com has censored the artist-activist-citizen journalist Suzannah B. Troy by suspending her entire account (300 videos).

Suzannah B. Troy, a New York City-based artist, citizen journalist, and blogger, has had her YouTube.com account inexplicably suspended by the popular video website.

Ms. Troy has spent months creating, editing, and posting hundreds of original citizen journalist videos focusing on the controversial election this year of local candidates running for third terms in office. In particular, Ms. Troy's videos have been highly critical of the New York City Council and Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The nature of the videos on her YouTube.com account have ranged from breaking news-quality videos of voter demonstrations, to video blogs of her commentary on the elections, to artistic interpretation of news events. There is no reason for her account to be suspended by YouTube other than for the political and artistic nature of their content.

Please write to Youtube at: press@youtube.com and ask them for their official policy of suspending accounts of artists and citizen journalists.

We are only weeks away from an important election, which shall decide if City Council Members and Mayor Bloomberg will thwart the will of voters' two referrenda on term limits. And missing from the free exchange of ideas during the critical debates that will be taking place in the time leading up to the election will be Ms. Troy's body of work.

Without you stepping in to blog, publish, or report about this questionable suspension of Ms. Troy's YouTube account (as well as the potential of loss of hundreds of videos), other citizen journalists may face the same sad fate : cyber suppression.

The New York Times reported that City Comptroller William C. Thompson Jr.'s mayoral campaign has filed a complaint with the city’s Campaign Finance Board arguing that Mayor Michael Bloomberg had failed to disclose more than $3.3 million in political contributions for the 2009 election, much of it to Republican organizations. An anonymous expert reported that these contributions were most likely made from Mr. Bloomberg’s own personal funds.

NYT: City Hall Broke Rules Funneling Money to Groups

After The New York Times reported that the Bloomberg administration had violated city contracting rules by directing substantial amounts of taxpayer funds (possibly in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to The Times ) to two politically connected groups, Comptroller William C. Thompson Jr. and Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum asked the mayor on Thursday for all documents relating to his office’s use of discretionary funds to finance nonprofit groups.

In a blog post by Ray Rivera, the The Times reported that, "...the mayor’s office has said that there is little paperwork supporting the review and that it relied on interviews with staff members to reconstruct the financing. When The Times asked this week for a copy of the audit, a spokesman for the mayor said the report was really little more than a, 'spreadsheet that detailed what was funded and by whom.' "

Mayor Michael Bloomberg will spy on 2004 G.O.P. convention protesters and secretly audio-tape his political rival's campaign events, but neither he nor his office has any substantial record of City Hall's own audit of the slush fund scandal ?
